BIKE TOURING ESSENTIALS
The temptation to go for a bike ride at the end of the day or at the weekend comes with the arrival of warmer weather and longer days. So you get your old bike out of the garage and... snap! The tire is flat, the chain has started to rust and a spider has even taken up residence between the three tubes of your frame! What's more, you don't have a pocket to stow your phone and cereal bar... So it's important to know how to equip yourself, even for a short outing, so here are the essentials for a bike ride!
Basic equipment
Safety is a top priority when you're on your bike! The number-one item is a helmet to protect you against a possible crash. To avoid mechanical problems, it's also essential to have a complete kit like our Repair Kit, remember to bring a spare inner tube, tire levers, a mini-pump or CO2 inflator, as well as a multifunction tool for minor adjustments and repairs. All this will enable you to deal with the eventuality of a puncture so quickly! When it comes to nutrition, remember to keep well hydrated and fueled, especially in hot weather, and always carry a bottle and some snacks. If you think your ride is going to last until nightfall, make sure you're visible on the road by equipping your bike with front and rear lights.
Finally, you're never safe from a little accident, so keep a small first-aid kit handy: including bandages, disinfectants and any necessary medication, especially if you're with children! And don't forget your cell phone, ID and cash if you need to make a little pit stop! If you're taking a break, you'll also need a bike lock to secure your bike during your short stop. You can store all these items in a small frame bag like the Z Adventure T1, the Console Pack T2 or even our Z Adventure C2 for an extra layer of clothing if it gets dark!
Comfort and preparation
For a pleasant, carefree bike ride, good preparation is essential! You can take a look at your itinerary before you set off to find out the time and distance of your ride. Smartphone mounts are available that you can attach directly to your bike handlebars to view the route live and avoid getting lost! Choose the right clothing for the weather conditions, and opt for sportswear made from breathable materials - it's always nicer to ride than the denim shorts from the back of your closet! Choose shorts with a padded crotch for greater comfort in the saddle, as well as a waterproof jacket in case of rain, which you can stow in one of your bags as seen in part 1.
The sun can be a false ally, especially in summer, so remember to protect yourself and your skin from UV rays by using sunscreen, sunglasses and headgear. If you're carrying water-sensitive items, such as a phone or your documents, be sure to store them in a waterproof bag to protect them from the elements. All this will enable you to enjoy your bike ride in comfort and safety! And before you set off, give your bike a thorough check-up, especially with regard to tire pressure and mechanical parts!
Cycling is a great way to unwind at the end of the day, to enjoy landscapes with family or friends, but it's not to be underestimated: cycling can quickly become a difficult activity with a vehicle with temperamental mechanics, which is why you need to be well-equipped! But now it's all out in the open, so enjoy the ride!
